Nokia’s 2020 flagship might be here soon, and we’ve collected all the latest news and rumours about the Nokia 9.2 PureView that you need to keep up to date before the launch.
Eagle-eyed Nokia fans might have spotted that the last smartphone in the series was the Nokia 9 PureView, so logically you’d expect the next entry in the series to be called the 9.1. Still, sources including NotebookCheck have reported that the handset intended as the 9.1 has been ditched after Nokia distanced itself from former collaborators Light (a camera manufacturer).
This article collects all the information we know so far on the Nokia 9.2, from the design to the specifications and more.
Nokia 9.2 PureView – Release Date
We’ve received a few tip-offs from that you might have to wait a lot longer than expected to get your first look at the Nokia 9.2.
NokiaMob expects the handset to be released after June 2020, and Twitter account Nokia Anew corroborate the date change in the embedded tweet above, claiming it’s shifted back to Autumn to account for an upgrade to the processor.
Optimistically, we had kept our fingers crossed for the device to be unveiled at MWC 2020 – but the event’s cancellation due to coronavirus soon put paid to that hope.
Nokia 9.2 PureView – Price
Given that there’s been a lot of uncertainty regarding the launch date, it’s no surprise that we haven’t yet come across a definitive price. However, rest assured that what we’ve heard so far is positive, as Android Authority claims that the Nokia is targeting a price point of around €600 (~£508) rather than the heady heights of £1000, which several flagships have already matched or exceeded. But that pricetag would nonetheless represent a healthy price snip compared to the previous model, which cost £549 at the point of release.
Nokia 9.2 PureView – Design
As of yet, we haven’t seen any reliable images showing what the Nokia 9.2 will look like. All we’ve got to go on so far is a good-looking render, embedded below, by concept designer Ben Gaskell.
This artistic impression shows off a notch-less screen and a circular camera module which houses four camera sensors, while the rear panel is a smooth, dark blue shade. We’d be happy to see a similar design to this make the final cut, but for the moment we’ll wait in anticipation for a reliable leak or two to get a sneak peek of the device before its release.
Nokia 9.2 PureView – Camera
The Nokia 9 PureView’s most intriguing feature was its unique camera arrangement, which consisted of five 12-megapixel lenses plus a Time-of-Flight sensor displayed in an even more trypophobia-triggering arrangement than the infamous iPhone 11 Pro.
After the Nokia 9 PureView’s radical experimentation launched to mixed reviews, the 9.2 will likely have a more traditional camera system similar to other phones on the market. We expect a high-resolution main sensor accompanied by one or two complementary snappers to provide some added versatility; for instance, an ultrawide lens or a telephoto sensor.
Meanwhile, NokiaMob claims that the selfie camera is due for a substantial upgrade to a resolution of 32- or 48-megapixels.
Nokia 9.2 PureView – Processor
According to all the sources we’ve come across so far, the Nokia 9.2 PureView will employ the Snapdragon 865 processor, Qualcomm’s top-tier chipset.
This news is promising though not surprising for a flagship phone – where it holds real significance is that this means the 9.2 would boast 5G connectivity, since the Snapdragon 865 runs in conjunction with an X55 modem.
This could make it the brand’s second 5G-compatible phone, following the launch of the Nokia 8.3 5G.
