Moto G 5G: what we know about Motorola’s next-gen affordable phone
Spread the love

Moto G phones are famous for one thing: being amazing value Android smartphones. And that trend has continued this year with the stellar Moto G8 Plus, Moto G8 Power and latest Moto G Pro.

But if you were to push us here at Trusted Reviews to find one common flaw between all the new Moto G’s, we’d have to highlight their lack of 5G connectivity. Which is why we’re super excited about the fabled arrival of a spiffy new Motorola Moto G 5G in the very near future.

Here’s what you need to know about the fabled Moto G 5G.

Is Motorola making 5G Moto G?

Motorola hasn’t confirmed plans to make a 5G Moto G, but recent leaks suggest the firm is fairly close to releasing one. The most recent report stemmed from serial mobile tipster Evan Blass on Twitter. At the end of June Blass not only tweeted an image of the alleged Moto G 5G, he also published a list of specs.

Though the news is unofficial, Blass has a strong record for accurately pre-leaking phone’s specs and renders so we’re taking it as being not complete BS, as we do with many other phone ‘leaks’/fan fiction.

The release of a 5G Moto G also makes sense given what’s going on in the wider mobile industry. Qualcomm unveiled new 6-series, 5G-ready Snapdragon chips in June, promising that handsets running them would appear in the not-too-distant future. Given Motorola’s strong track record in the affordable space it would make sense for it to be one of the first companies to get the tech to market.

What are the Moto G 5G’s specs?

There’s no official news on this, though Blass’ leak suggests it’ll be fairly similar to the existing Moto G8, outside of its improved connectivity.

The leak reported the Moto G 5G as being powered by one of Qualcomm’s new affordable 5G chips, having 4GB RAM and coming with Android 10 installed out of the box. The leak also suggested it’ll have the same 48-megapixel main camera sensor as the G8 and new Moto G Pro. This’ll apparently be backed up by 5-megapixel macro and 2-megapixel depth sensors.

The only notable upgrade on the regular G8 is that its FHD+ resolution screen will have a 90Hz refresh rate. A higher than 60Hz refresh rate is rare on an affordable phone and helps make the screen feel more reactive and smoother to use, so we’re all for the new Moto G 5G bringing it to the cheaper end of the market.

When is the Moto G 5G coming out?

Motorola hasn’t confirmed the existence of a 5G Moto G so it doesn’t have a release date yet. Though based on current industry rumblings we’d expect it to arrive before the end of the year.

How much will the Moto G 5G cost?

The phone’s currently just a rumour, but based on the Moto G8 Plus and Moto G8 Pro’s current pricing, we’d expect it to retail for around £300.
